Folksong: Final Ride

This folksong describes the same imaginary desert culture as “Caravan.”  This time the riders have ridden to join a neighboring grasslands culture, for a climactic battle against a powerful adversary.  Desert and grasslands nature imagery mix, contrasted against images of battle.

Composer’s Comment: In composing song lyrics, I find that pronouns, and suddenly changing or introducing new ones, is one of the most powerful ways to suddenly shift the meaning of a song.  Here we think we are observing from the perspective of the riding warriors, but suddenly with the introduction of a first person pronoun suddenly the perspective shifts to the adversary, opening questions about what this battle is about, and what will really happen to those who participate.
